certified coding specialist is a health info technician who focuses on medical coding, also called a medical coder. They evaluate patients' medical info and input it into electronic health records and databases based on a procedure coding system. they may also facilitate communications between clinical care providers and medical billing offices. although certification is not required, it will improve future job prospects.
According to the AHIMA, applicants should have a high school diploma or ts equivalent to be eligible to sit for the CCS test.though not needed, the AHIMA suggests that applicants should have at least 3 years of experience coding hospital-based inpatient and outpatient medical records; they must also have completed courses in anatomy, materia medica, and pathophysiology according to intelligentsia Institute Of Medical coding .
The 4-hour test consists of 2 parts. the first part contains a written check of 60 multiple-choice questions - only fifty questions are scored, and also the remaining ten queries are pretest things. Pretest queries are included to assess the item's performance to be used in future exams and do not count toward the applicant's overall score. The second a part of the exam needs applicants to code 13 medical records, a combination of seven outpatient records and 6 inpatient records. CCS exams are scored on a pass-or-fail basis, and also the results are mailed to the applicant.
